Blue Moon

In case you didn’t know, on News Years Eve there will be a Blue Moon (2 full moons in one month.  But this one is the first in 19 years on New Years Eve.  In addition, for those of you on the East coast, there will also be a partial eclipse!  Question:  Why is it that every time we have an eclipse, the ‘experts’ always say that it’s the last one we will have for the next 100 years??

It’s raining her in So Cal today!  Unexpected as usual but welcome.  A nice, light steady rain.  As I’ve said before, weathermen come to So Cal to retire and they still can’t get it right!  Hopefully it will clear up tomorrow.  It’s supposed to be 71F on New Years Day here.

Guns For Gifts

What a Great idea!!!

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies expected heavy business Tuesday during the department’s "gift for guns" program in Compton.

And sure enough, scores of people lined up to turn in various weapons in exchange for supermarket gift certificates.

But they were surprised at the man who pulled up in an SUV with 58 guns — mostly small handguns but also some assault weapons. Dressed in a sweatshirt and jeans, the mystery man offered his cache in a nonchalant fashion.

As is the policy for such events, the deputies asked no questions and eagerly took the guns. They don’t know the man’s name, and the donor declined to comment to The Times.

After unloading his weapons, the man received several thousands of dollars in supermarket coupons and drove away.

"That should feed someone for a year or two," said Lt. Anthony Lucia. "There were a lot of the kind of weapons used in robberies. We don’t know his identity. We don’t know if he is gun dealer or what. But that is 58 guns off the street."

The Compton exchange Tuesday garnered 232 guns, all of which will be destroyed. The Gift for Guns program has been a staple of the Sheriff’s Department’s crime reduction efforts in Compton, which has seen a drop in homicides in recent years.

Countywide, the program has taken 5,000 guns off the streets throughout L.A. County.  At the Santa Clarita station earlier this year, one person dropped off a 20mm artillery shell and another person left 11 guns, including a Thompson .45-caliber submachine gun, an SKS assault rifle and an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle.

5.8 Mexico quake felt in O.C., San Diego

SAN DIEGO – A magnitude-5.8 earthquake in northern Baja California rocked the U.S.-Mexico border region Wednesday, causing buildings to sway more than 100 miles to the west in downtown San Diego and in southwestern Arizona. It also was widely felt in Orange County.

The main quake, at 10:48 a.m., was centered about 20 miles southeast of the Mexican border city of Mexicali, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It was followed quickly by a 4.9 quake and other aftershocks.

Residents of Mexicali and Calexico occasionally endure swarms of small, frequent tremors that rattle nerves but cause little damage. In February, a swarm had been under way for nearly two weeks when a magnitude-5.0 jolt rocked the region.

Wednesday’s earthquake occurred in a region of Baja California where the Earth’s crust is being pulled apart, resulting mostly in swarms.

A quake the size of Wednesday’s main shock rattles the region about every 10 years.

No wonder I was feeling dizzy!!!!

That’s some amazing info about the blue moon Bob, thank you for that. The gun thing…well, the debate on that could rage on forever. I figure that for the most part criminals end up armed while the citizens aren’t…I feel that’s a right that should be protected…I won’t be giving up my Glock for food any time soon…I jumped the required hoops to have a CCW and they still seem like they don’t like it much…never mind I’ve had it and caused no problems ever…but I digress. I hear our state is very likely to have "the big one" being with Yellowstone near by and all but so far we seldom feel even a rumble…may it stay that way. We felt them often in the Philippines since they had active volcanoes and were in the ring of fire…it always made me dizzy too…but you might check if your speedos are too tight! Oh man…I got another one in there!

Happy New Year Bob…I remember the Ice Bowl. Those frozen fields. Now all the fields are heated to keep them from freezing.Of coarse being a Vikings fan I was disgruntled with another loss. But I enjoyed watching Brett will them back into the game. The Vikings have lost some key players on defense for the season and that has hurt there playoff push. I’m just going to set back and enjoy no matter what happens.Last night while watching the Holiday Bowl in San Diego. I was thinking, "Oh to be in that California warmth…"I spoke to my neighbors this morning and said I had to kind of chuckle at myself the other day because I looked up when our average daily temperature starts rising for 2010. That is January 23rd here in Branson.I could definitely go for temps in the seventies today. We could set in front of your house and throw pistachios at that car parked in front of your house with people staring at us.Here’s to a good 2010 for many…GregYou know I never experienced a earthquake while living in California. Experienced a good shaker while living in Salt Lake City and two while living in Oregon.Full Moon on New Years should be a real adventure for crime fighters this year? I was invited to join some other neighbors down at the Bleu Olive restaurant. Nah! That’s for couples. I’ll just stay home with my feet propped up in front of the fireplace keeping them toasty warm. You and your loved ones be well…
